Living in The Rolling Hills Apartments

The Rolling Hills Apartment office is located at 101 Virginia Road in Oak Ridge, TN. The Rolling Hills Apartments are not college/university housing, but rather residential housing in a residential neighborhood. You are surrounded by a broad spectrum of neighbors, including elderly, people who work early, and people with small children. Please conduct yourself accordingly. Use common sense when walking in dark areas at night. It is a good idea to travel in pairs or groups. Be alert in the parking lot, especially if your arms are laden with groceries. Report any incident which makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe to the Resident Director and the leasing office (if another resident is involved).

Be respectful of your neighbors and keep the volume of hallway conversations, activities and electronics at a reasonable level. You should also expect the same from your neighbors. If you are not comfortable addressing a repeatedly noisy neighbor, contact the leasing office for advice on how to handle the situation.

Any maintenance problems encountered with your apartment should first be addressed with the management in the leasing office. Contact information should be included with your moving in/leasing packet. Make sure that you carefully and thoroughly check all rooms of your apartment for any damage to windows, carpets, walls, furniture, etc. and note it on the form you return to the leasing office. Note everything, no matter how small or picky, so that you will not be charged for it later. It is important to really spend time on this aspect of moving in. Make sure that you and your roommate are involved in the process. It is a good idea to keep a copy of this list. Your memory might not be so clear when you are moving out in December.

You have the right to clean and safe housing. If your apartment is not clean when you move in, report this to the leasing office. If, after repeated attempts, your requests for maintenance are not addressed to your satisfaction contact the Resident Director or Dr. Gibson in the Denison University ORSS office.

Some Grocery Stores in Oak Ridge:

  • Bi-Lo (1199 Oak Ridge Turnpike--at the intersection of Rutgers Avenue and the Oak Ridge Turnpike) Get a Bi-Lo card and save money.

  • Wal-Mart Superstore (373 South Illinois Avenue.) The biggest Wal-Mart I've ever seen. It also has a grocery store.

  • Kroger (308 South Illinois Avenue--behind the McDonald's restaurant) Get a Kroger card by filling out an application at the service desk. This will save you money on many purchases.

Other Retail Outlets: Much of the retail heart of Oak Ridge is contained within the triangle bounded by Rutgers Avenue, Illinois Avenue (Route 62), and the Oak Ridge Turnpike (Route 95). Kroger and Bi-Lo are both located in strip malls with various retail stores. The Oak Ridge Mall is at 333 Main Street--right next to Wal-Mart. Several other stores--including several pharmacies, a movie theater, and a Staples--are adjacent to the mall. Sears, JCPenney's, and Proffitt's are the anchor stores for the mall, but a good portion of the mall is actually vacant. For the usual mall experience drive 20 minutes to the West Town Mall in western Knoxville (7600 Kingston Pike; Exit 380 off I-40). The Kingston Pike in west Knoxville (which runs parallel to and just south of I-40) has a good selection of well-known retail stores and restaurants. Cumberland Avenue (right next to the University of Tennessee) has many college-oriented shops and restaurants. If you like Outlet Malls (and do not mind traffic jams) one of the country's largest outlet mall centers is located in Pigeon Forge. A less crowded but smaller mall is near Crossville, off I-40.
